Uruguay shock Ghana

Uruguay broke African hearts by knocking Ghana out of the World Cup with a dramatic penalty shoot out win.

Ghana took the lead on the stroke of half time thanks to a spectacular long range goal from Sulley Muntari.

But deadly Diego Forlan struck a brilliant free kick goal for Uruguay on 55 minutes, taking the game into extra time.

In the last minute, Uruguay striker Luis Suarez prevented a certain Ghana winner with a cynical handball, receiving a red card for his efforts.

Ghana failed to capitalise, however, when Asamoah Gyan hit the bar with the penalty, with the final whistle blown seconds later.

A brave Gyan scored Ghana's first penalty in the shoot out, but misses from John Mensah and Dominic Adiyiah, plus a supremely composed final penalty from Sebastian Abreu took Uruguay through to their first World Cup semi final since 1970.
