We follow Tom Hanks in a story where a soul is shaped from a killer to a hero and a simple act of kindness ripples across the centuries to inspire a revolution... The action shifts from the remote islands of the South Pacific in the 19th century, via the 30s and 70s to the present day before arriving in a Blade Runner-like post-apocalyptic future.
Confused? Hanks' plays several characters whose relationship with various incarnations of Halle Berry is a key to the story as she proclaims: "Our lives are not our own, we are bound to others past and present. And by each crime and every kindness we birth our future..."
Made outside the Hollywood system in Germany for a cool $100m this looks like the arty equivalent of Inception. Also starring Hugh Grant, Hugo Weaving, Jim Sturgess, Ben Wishaw (Q in next Bond flick Skyfall) and Korean actress Doona Bae, Cloud Atlas will be in UK cinemas early next year.
