After more than a decade in the spotlight starring alongside Russell Crowe in Gladiator and making cool flicks like Buffalo Soldiers, Joaquin Phoenix called time on his silver screen celebrity to go off the rails in search of a new career as a rapper - documented in the 2010 faux documentary I'm Still Here.
Appearing to have thrown it all away, following an Oscar-nominated performance in Johnny Cash biopic Walk the Line, the actor is back and on award-winning form in the new film from Paul Thomas Anderson ( the man behind Boogie Nights, cool Tom Cruise movie Magnolia and There Will Be Blood) that takes a fictional look at the origins of Scientology...
Phoenix plays naval veteran Freddie Quell back from WWII and unsure about his future until he is seduced by The Cause and its charismatic leader Lancaster Dodd played by Philip Seymour Hoffman.
The intense drama of The Master is in cinemas November 9th.
