Skyfall review!

Skyfall clip

Bond is back and oh how we've missed him!

We can thank the Bourne franchise for giving 007 a kick up the arse that saw a brutal, back to basics, Bond deliver a stunning debut for Daniel Craig in Casino Royale. Though he faltered with the patchy Quantum of Solace secret agent spectaculars were never meant to be sequels and with four years to get it right with Skyfall our favourite spy is back on form for an epic journey leaving The Bourne Supremacy in the shadows...

Director Sam Mendes crucially balances believability with fantasy taking Bond back to his roots while fighting a terrorist threat on home soil but not before a belting opening sequence in Istanbul that shows Taken 2 how it should be done. Rooftop parkour? Check. Car chase chaos? Check. Going toe to toe on top of a moving train? Check. With 00 agents under threat as their identities are exposed it's up to Bond to neutralise the threat. As ever 007 goes rogue playing dead to get the job done but this time he's a bit more battered, bruised and world weary...

Highlights include a scrap with a trio of heavies and a Komodo Dragon at a Macau casino before a tense showdown hanging off a Shanghai skyscraper where we meet eye-popping femme fatale Severine (played by French fancy Berenice Marlohe). And that's all before the villain even takes a bow. Javier Bardem's Raoul Silva is up there with the best of them combining the scheming insanity of Blofeld with the brute force of Jaws. A former agent with a vendetta against Judi Dench's M his crazed cyber terrorist reminds us of Heath Ledger's joker while pulling the strings like Hannibal Lecter in Silence of the Lambs. As the latest clip to be released shows, there are fireworks when Bond and his adversary finally face off in a series of stunning set pieces across London.

Featuring Voldemort bloke Ralph Fiennes as an MI6 bigwig, Ben Wishaw (Craig's co-star in Layer Cake) reviving the nerdiness of Q and Brit bird Naomie Harris providing vital back up for Bond in the field, the killer cast round out a story with more teasing twists and dramatic turns than Enders on steroids.

Is it the best Bond ever?

Part origin story, Skyfall leaves Ian Fleming's creation grounded and real. Craig's Bond is a hero for our times channelling the swagger of Connery, with more punch than predecessor Brosnan could ever muster, so it's no surprise they've signed him up for two more films. James Bond will return. Just please don't make us wait four more years for the next one!
