Video: Elysium

Neill Blomkamp delivered the best sci-fi flick since Alien with the game-changing District 9 and following the aborted Halo movie he's back with another inventive slab of sci-fi, again based around the concept of segregation.

In a post-apocalyptic future (aren’t they always?) it’s the year 2159 and society is split. The rich live on a luxury space station called Elysium while those left behind struggle to survive on our ruined planet now racked with disease and pollution - these scenes were filmed in Mexico City at the world’s second largest dump. Jodie Foster plays the government honcho enforcing murderous anti-immigration laws to preserve the paradise for those on Elysium but there’s always some ready to escape Earth at any cost…

Enter Matt Damon, an ex-con with a shitty factory job who, suffering from radiation poisoning and with days to live, does a deal with the underworld and is forced to become a cyborg (check out that arm) and venture to Elysium to retrieve a cure that could not only save his life but bring equality to mankind… On a collision course with badass agent Sharlto Copley (Wikus from District 9) expect a megaton of carnage when Elysium hits cinemas August 21st.

Official synopsis:

In the year 2159 two classes of people exist: the very wealthy who live on a pristine man-made space station called Elysium, and the rest, who live on an overpopulated, ruined Earth. Secretary Rhodes (Jodie Foster), a hard line government official, will stop at nothing to enforce anti-immigration laws and preserve the luxurious lifestyle of the citizens of Elysium. That doesn’t stop the people of Earth from trying to get in, by any means they can. When unlucky Max (Matt Damon) is backed into a corner, he agrees to take on a daunting mission that if successful will not only save his life, but could bring equality to these polarized worlds.
