p0ab2 Hearts 1 Celtic 0 - Coca Cola Cup September 17th 1996
With Hearts having had 4 men sent off the previous Saturday at Ibrox it would take a brave person to back them in this one. Stefano Salvatori's sending off was Hearts 5th in a matter of days which added to the likely prospect of a Celtic win. However Hearts held on at 0-0 to force the game into extra time. In that period Peter Grant was sent off for Celtic which gave Hearts the first sniff of a possible victory. In the second half of extra time John Robertson scored what would prove to be the only goal of the game in what was truly a memorable match at Tynecastle. It should not be forgotten that manager Jim Jefferies pulled off a masterstroke on the day of the game by signing defender Andy Thorne from Wimbledon on a short term deal on the day of the match. Thorne's contribution was absolutely vital. Copyright - BBC
